How we ran this test

We gave four writing tools the same 75 briefs: blog posts, landing pages, cold emails, product descriptions, and executive summaries. Outputs were blind-judged in randomised pairs by three editors scoring publishability, voice, and factual care. We also timed edit-to-publishable for each draft — because a "good" draft that needs 40 minutes of surgery isn't good. Tools tested: Claude (Sonnet/Opus, $20/month Pro), ChatGPT (GPT-4-class, $20/month Plus), Jasper (Creator, $49/month), Writesonic ($16/month).

What the numbers hide

Claude won on prose that sounds like a person wrote it — judges flagged its drafts as "AI-flavoured" least often. Its weakness: it will occasionally over-qualify claims where punchy copy is wanted.

ChatGPT was the most versatile all-rounder and the best at structured formats (comparison tables, FAQs) — but its default register still needs de-flavouring for brand work.

Jasper lost the raw-quality fight yet won a different one: with Brand Voice configured, its drafts needed the fewest voice corrections across a multi-writer team. That's the real product — consistency at team scale, not better sentences.

Writesonic trailed on quality but was the strongest per-dollar for SEO-scaffolded posts: its SERP-aware outlines saved real research time even when we rewrote the prose.

So which should you pay for?

BTZ bottom line

On pure writing quality the order is Claude, ChatGPT, Jasper, Writesonic — and it wasn't close at the top. But "best writer" and "best buy" diverge the moment teams and workflows enter: Jasper's brand controls and Writesonic's SEO scaffolding solve problems the better writers don't. Match the tool to the failure mode you're actually paying to avoid.
