GitHub Copilot's stable pricing

Unlike most AI tools in our database, GitHub Copilot has not raised prices since its June 2022 general availability launch. The $10/month Individual price has remained constant for nearly four years while the underlying AI capabilities improved significantly.

The pattern GitHub has followed: add higher-tier plans (Business, Enterprise) to capture enterprise willingness to pay, rather than increasing the core individual price. This is the same approach OpenAI and Anthropic have taken with their AI assistant products.

Current value assessment

GitHub Copilot Individual at $10/month is well-priced relative to alternatives. The free tier launched in January 2026 addresses the evaluation problem. For enterprise users, the Business and Enterprise tiers provide compliance features that justify the premium. See our full review for the Cursor comparison.

The January 2026 free tier launch was a direct response to Codeium's permanently free offering, which had been taking market share among individual developers and students. The response suggests GitHub sees the individual tier as strategically important even at the cost of some paid conversions.

Frequently asked questions

Has GitHub Copilot ever raised its price?
No — the Individual plan has remained at $10/month since June 2022. GitHub has added higher tiers rather than increasing the core price.
Is GitHub Copilot free for students?
Yes — verified students and teachers get GitHub Copilot free through the GitHub Student Developer Pack. Open source maintainers also qualify for free access.
What's the difference between Copilot Business and Individual?
Business ($19/user/month) adds: organisational policy controls, audit logs, no training on your code by default, and IP indemnification. Individual ($10) has none of these enterprise features.
